Dye wanted to be a paratrooper and even enrolled in the US Army Airborne School at Fort Benning in Georgia, but never entered World War II because it was over before he got an opportunity to be sent overseas.

In the meantime, he excelled as an amateur golfer, and even won the Indiana State Amateur Championship in 1958.

Dye decided to become a golf course designer and he designed his first 18-hole course in Indianapolis named Heather Hills in 1961, now known as Maple Creek Golf & Country Club. His next endeavour was the Radrick Farms Golf Course at the University of Michigan in 1962 and it opened in 1965, while the following year Dye visited Scotland to thoroughly study classical golf courses. Upon his return to the US in 1964, Pete designed the Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana, which would be used for the 1991 PGA Championship, while three years later, he completed The Golf Club near Columbus, Ohio.
